September 20th - 27th is National Dog Week! This yearly event helps spread the word about canines who might not be so well off. This week helps inspire pup owners to spend time with their dogs and spoil them for the companionship they provide. Isn't it great to have the loyalty of a precious doggo?
This event isn't to be confused with National Pet Week, which is in May. National Dog Week was first introduced by Captain William Judy in 1928. He was a serious lover of dogs and he was the author of “The Dog Encyclopedia” and “The Care of the Dog” under the pseudonym, “Weimer Port.” He was also the publisher of “Dog World Magazine” and founded the Dog Writers Association of America in 1935.
Captain William Judy's goal was to help improve the lives of dogs. He also wanted educate other pup owners on how to care for their precious furry companions, help dogs that are in shelters to find their forever homes, and to overall ensure that these pups could live better lives.
Some Fun Ways to Celebrate National Dog Week
The best part about National Dog Week is that it gives you a whole week to devote to your dog. Here are some ideas...
1. Get Your Pup Some Miss Nelly's
Obviously, haha!!! Miss Nelly's is a great treat to buy for your loyal companions!
2. Plan a Doggy Day Trip
Most people appreciate routine when walking their dogs. We might go around the same block and visit the same park, right? It's nice to have routines, but it could also be fun to take your pup to check out some new places. You could check out some local walking trails that welcome dogs or try a new dog park. Pack a picnic lunch, put on good shoes, and spend the day hiking! You could also give your dog an extra walk in the day, giving them a nice surprise!
4. Get New Accessories or Toys
A new collar, least, ID tag, or chew toy might be a great way to spoil your fur-babe.
5. Donate or Adopt
Donate spare change or take the time to volunteer and help out with the dogs at a shelter. National Dog Week is also a great time to consider adopting a dog of your own; that is if you’re sure you can afford to take care of them. While you’re volunteering, you might find a dog that you can’t go home without!
Whatever you do, enjoy your loyal buddies and give them hugs from Miss Nelly's
